Well, the whole thing is fanfiction, BUTTTTT I only made the decision to veer into parent territory because the show did it first. Russell T Davies introduced the Doctor's mother in The End of Time as this mysterious and sad lady that's all cliched and crap and was inappropriately timed in terms of the overall story. Like 'what? his mom? what?' and then she's gone. Nice one RTD.
So I tried to think about a way to address the Doctor's parents in MY version of the End of Time, and since his mother was ruined by RTD, I thought I'd take a look at his father, who's been mentioned in the books or whatever before and is actually kinda interesting.
My point is, I never would have done this plot with his dad if RTD hadn't done the mom thing in the first place.
I agree it's a bit 'soap opera', but describing a cliched trope or twist as 'fanfiction territory' is just insulting to fan fiction.
I know. Oh god I know. But the same expanded universe that talks about Looms and Chapter Houses and the mind-numbingly boring detail that the fandom drove themselves nuts with in the dark times ALSO talks about the Doctor's father. As far as I know, it doesn't talk about his mother as much. So there's more 'canon' that supports my father storyline than RTD's mother storyline. I think.
Not that I'm saying mine's better. The whole subject is kind of unnecessary and I'm hardly the one to write it and so far really haven't.
And RTD fully admits that the 'woman' is the Doctor's mother in interviews and even his autobiography. HE knew what he was writing, but he just didn't have the balls to say it in the show because yeah, that would mess with SOMETHING someone's said in a novel or something, and he'd get complaints. Maybe he knew he was half-assing it and didn't want to commit. I dunno.
Not how I've decided to look at it. Unlike Jenny, Handy is not a brand new person. He has all the Doctor's memories and identifies himself as the Doctor. Thanks to RTD it doesn't make much sense, but he's a Doctor duplicate and not the Doctor's son.
