French Speakers Required in Art Theft Case!

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 27, 2011, 2:17 AM
Parlez-vous Francais? If you are a fluent speaker, please send a note over to eurasia-art.
Someone has posted some of her art on their Facebook page, uncredited, and argues that he doesn't have to take it down because anything on the internet is fair game. Trouble is, he keeps replying to her pleas in French and she really can't convince this guy to budge. French might just be the key to this guy getting it.
More details (and probably more accurate ones) on her front page's journal.
-->:iconeurasia-art:<--
Facebook really needs to improve on helping artists with stolen work.
Merci beaucoup mes amis!
(Et oui, je parle Francais mais ce n'est pas ma premiere langue. Je suis comment vous dites... 'rusty'. Et un peu 'crap'.)

EDIT: SOLVED!
A big ol' merci to everyone that helped with this case. You all did a gorgeous job, proved that for every crappy internet guy there are like 60 awesome internet people, and the thief has taken the art down from Facebook.

  • Mood: Tired
  • Listening to: Someting humming. What the hell is humming!?
  • Reading: Little Dorrit - Dickens
  • Watching: The Advetures of Sherlock Holmes
  • Eating: Soup
  • Drinking: Arizona Green Tea

Hey, I know the case is solved, but here is a useful post about art theft-- the best part about it is that it has a list of people who are willing to help people with their other language. [link] it's an old post, so I'm not sure how many of the people are still active, but still, I think it's of some worth :D

My. God. Can people STOP posting others art work uncredited? And if it's not yours, and you know where it is from, why would even upload it in the first place? It's not that hard to at least put a link to the artists page.

And the whole "Everything on the internet is fair game" is a silly as committing a crime in another country and going "I'm not from your country, so you can trial me!"

I can help too if needed, since French is my native language (and English, as you may have noticed, a learned skill ;-) )

Eurasia-art, just drop me a message if you need my help. If not, well, "Tant mieux" as we say, ("good for you"), because it means you already found help :)

You know, it seems that even if she just put in bogus contact info the copyright claim alone is enough to completely lock his account. Check this out:

Ugh, I hate it when art thieves use that "Whatever's on the internet is free" excuse. It's just childish and rude.
Unless facebook starts working on banning art thieves it's going to get REALLY unpopular to artists.

The problem is that you don't have to be actually part of Facebook to get in trouble in this kind of situations. People will pluck things from the net and use it anyway. Not thinking about copyright ect.

Very true. But at least in most forums and art communities they try and do something about art theft. Facebook's only really given you two options.
1. Let the thief get away with it
2. Give them your contact details which will be passed onto the art thief (and then there's no guarentee he'll even listen to them anyway).

Then of course there's the privacy settings. For all I know, somebody could have stolen my artwork and uploaded on their page without my permission. But because of the privacy setting on Facebook I'll never know.

Indeed. I found the guy before he changed his settings.
Because my friends later on couldn't find him anymore.

Well, someone has been trying to help me out. And it seems that we're on the right track. But it could be empty promises of the thief though...
But I imagine that this could raise some awareness of some kind?

Most certainly (in regards to the awareness). I wonder if there's some sort of petition that could be sent to facebook to change the personal information policy.

Well, if your work has a water mark or is copywrited, him stealing your work is against the law. If it is under a common artists law from dA, him stealing your work is against the law. So. Threaten him with that, or talk to dA and FB.

I tried facebook, but they will send your details (address, email and phonenumber) to the person you're accusing. And I don't really like the idea of a nutter being made able to stalk me because I reported him for art theft.

I'm not really familiar with the concept of PO boxes. I think they are called "Postbus" here in the Netherlands. But as far as I know it's only companies and govermental things using those.

Hmm, not sure how it works where you are. Here in America anyone can get one (I actually have a friend with a stalker who supplies the po box address to everything). I would certainly look into it. If not... possibly putting the address of a business or landmark? That might not help if this actually became a legal battle though. I've only looked at a few of your pieces, but is the one he is using signed? That might help.

Yes it's signed. It's an exact copy of the one I posted into my blog (not sure if it's click able to the actual drawing in my blog though...)
I'm looking it up. Especially if his promises are full of nothingness. And maybe I can use it later in life to get rid of these people in an earlier stage.
